So we’re down to the final month of the year, and this is generally a time of reflection for most people. So I thought I’d share some of my own experiences as well as 10 key business lessons from 2018…
In January of this year I had my biggest income month so far… $25k USD – that’s almost $35k AUD in ONE month.
To some people that’s incomprehensible. To others, it’s pocket change.
For me, it was amazing. That month I was on a road trip down south and hardly even had phone reception so could barely do any work. I didn’t even bring my laptop because I didn’t want it to get broken or stolen since we were camping most nights.
And I still made that kind of income. I was living the real life 4 hour workweek!
I remember every time we pulled into a town with reception I’d check my phone and there’d be another big commission email. It was nuts!
All my hard work from previous months was finally paying off. In February I was on track to make the same….
If I continued that way, by the end of this year I would’ve quadrupled my annual corporate salary.
BUT… I never saw any of it…
By March I had my lowest income month… $0
Turns out the company I was promoting was being investigated behind the scenes and overnight all their assets were frozen, our affiliate accounts were barred, and we were told we just had to wait until further notice.
After a few weeks of confusion, shock, anger, frustration, and all the other various emotions… I was faced with the very hard truth that I might have to return to a job. And I felt like I had well and truly failed.
I was so ashamed to tell the people closest to me because I couldn’t bear to hear the “I told you so’s”
Not to mention the overwhelming guilt that I was now the cause of so many other people losing money as well. Because if I hadn’t shared it with them, they wouldn’t be in this position.
As I started searching through job posts trying to find something that would be even a tiny bit bearable, this sick feeling came over me. Not one of those jobs was going to fulfil me. I could have easily written the best cover letters and told employers exactly what they wanted to hear so they would hire me. But deep down I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I’ve become unemployable because I don’t want to subject myself to that feeling of losing my freedom ever again.
And this is where my true entrepreneurial spirit came out. Faced with the bleak reality of returning to a soul sucking job, I was given more fire than ever. There is no way I was giving up that easily.
I also felt a responsibility to all my team members. A duty to show them that we could make it through this tough time together.
I could’ve scrambled to the next company like a lot of others did, but I chose to wait.
I knew some friends/mentors who had a better plan. They’d already had a vision for what they wanted to create, and this was the push they needed to start bringing it to life.
And in the meantime I learnt to leverage my growing brand and substantial Instagram following to close paid influencer deals. Thankfully I had listened to my mentors and built up my own brand rather than just blasting out sales links like a lot of other people who didn’t have the right training and support.
They were some of the most stressful months of my life. This wasn’t what I had signed up for.
But it also turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me (and many others). If all that bad stuff didn’t happen, this new company would probably still be a pipe dream.
Something we all talked about but never acted on because we were too comfortable receiving our healthy commission payments.
It was the wake up call we needed to bring about HUGE change to the online world.
And if you haven’t been paying attention to us yet, you definitely should be.
Our biggest mission is to change the online space. And it all starts with genuine, heart centred education. It’s at the core of everything we do.
We won’t make claims that you’ll make x amount of money in x amount of days. That’s just not us.
And we never claim to be experts in everything. But we bring in people who are. So you can learn about any online career you desire.
Because we want people to have a choice about how they make their income online.
We want you to follow the path that feels right for you. And we want to be there to guide you as you figure all that stuff out. So you don’t have to keep buying course after course and keep feeling like you’re getting nowhere.
We also learnt that relying on other companies to keep paying you isn’t always the way to go. So we want to teach you how to build something of your own, something where you have full control. We teach you how to build a legacy business, a brand that stands the tests of time, something you can be proud of and keep nurturing. Quite simply, your forever business.
Since the birth of Summit Affiliate, I’ve had students start their own coaching businesses, create their own courses, launch their own social media management companies, become successful affiliates, bloggers, and influencers just to name a few things. Every day more and more of my students are quitting their 9-5’s and spending their days doing what they love.
And it’s such a good feeling to know I was the person that inspired this change in them. THAT is the reason why I keep doing what I do.
I haven’t quite gotten back to the level of income I was earning at the start of this year. But I’ve done it before so I know I can do it again. And what I have achieved is far greater. I’ve managed to remain independent and boss free, and I’ve continued to help many other people work towards doing the same.
If I had given up and returned to a job all those months ago, these people never would’ve had the chance to start creating their dream businesses.
So yes, times were tough, but I’m glad I didn’t choose the easy route. Because me being in a job that sucks the life out of me is not living to my true purpose.
Why am I sharing this with you?
Because I want to use my experience to help you avoid making the same mistakes I did by sharing my 10 key business lessons from 2018.
1. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket
This may sound pretty self explanatory but there’s this common advice online about mastering one business before you consider others. This is all well and good, but it can be risky business if your primary source of income is reliant on other parties to pay you. Companies come and go, so if all your income is coming from one place and that company suddenly gets shut down, you want to have other options to fall back on.
2. Don’t get too comfortable
This is probably the point where you really need to think about the comment above. If you’re earning a good income, don’t get comfortable and complacent. This is the time when you should be learning new things and trying new strategies so you can constantly be building, diversifying, and growing.
3. Learn to diversify your income streams
This follows on from the previous two points. Once you’re confident with one source of income you should be on the look out to add other sources to your arsenal. This way, if something does happen you won’t be hit so hard. This can be simple things like smaller affiliate offers, building your own courses, getting paid for influencer deals, freelance work etc. Learn to utilise your skills to create other streams of income.
Thankfully this is what saved me this year. Although my primary source of income was taken away, I had other things to fall back on as I mentioned above.
4. Don’t get attached to products and companies.
They come and go, YOU are the only constant thing you can control in your life. This is why I put such a huge emphasis on teaching people to build their personal brands. The most important thing is to always stay true to your why. Sometimes products you once loved will no longer be aligned with your values, or you may not even get a choice and they may be taken away. So don’t get too attached. Be attached to your vision and goals instead.
5. Focus on building your own brand.
This is a topic I’m very passionate about as this is the one thing that truly saved me this year. You are more than the product you promote. You are a human with a story. Put your heart and soul into what you do and focus on establishing your personal brand. This way you’ll always attract the right kind of people.
6. Align yourself with people who have the same vision and values as you.
I cannot stress enough how important this is. If I didn’t have a supportive community around me this year I would’ve crumbled. Friends and family will support you but they won’t understand your crazy dreams until they see them work. And when things don’t quite go according to plan they’re going to show their concern and without realising they might encourage you to give up. You need people around you who are going to encourage you to keep going and not give up on your dreams.
These are some of the people that have done that for me => https://aussieadventuress.com/sa-team
7. Invest in your education.
Whether it be through courses, books, events, coaching. There is no greater investment you can make than educating yourself. I’ve spent over $50,000 in all of these things over the last year and I wouldn’t have it any other way. These investments will pay off for years to come. You might feel like an investment is a lot at the time, but once your mind is opened up to the possibilities that are out there, no investment will ever feel like too much.
8. Realise there’s no escaping hard work.
But there is a way to work hard on things that make you feel fulfilled. Realising they actually have to work is something that stops a lot of people from succeeding. They think working online is easy because they just see the highlight reels that many people share. Working online requires hard work, determination, and resilience but it is also the most rewarding thing in the world. Because you set the rules, you get to choose where you work from and when you work and who you work with.
9. Don’t ever lose sight of your dreams.
The path may change, but always stay true to your WHY and everything will fall into place. You started this for a reason, and the road to success is going to be full of ups, downs, and learning curves. But this all makes you stronger and if you ride it out it will most definitely be worth it.
10. Drop your ego.
This is probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do but sometimes you just need to ask the people you love for help. And you’ll be surprised at their reactions.
So there you have it, 10 of my key business lessons from 2018. And finally, I want you to realise that no matter how bad a situation might seem at the time. You can turn it around.
Because I believe everybody deserves to build a life they love. Whether you want to quit your job and travel around the world or just replace your income so you can work from home, I want you to know you CAN do it.
You are fully in control of your life. And where you’re at in life at this same point next year is totally up to you.
There is nothing wrong with receiving money for doing what you love. In fact, that is the best thing you could possibly do. Life is far too short to be doing anything other than what you absolutely love! And when you live up to your purpose you can’t help but inspire others to live up to theirs as well. Now that’s powerful!
So if you’ve read this far and you’re wondering how you can make this final month of the year the one where you stopped making excuses and started working towards a life you love as well I’d love to invite you to join me in the same training that has changed my life.
