An exercise in defining Freedom.
Now I know everyone has a different view on what freedom means depending on their circumstances but this is a bit of an exploration, and my interpretation, which will then hopefully inspire others to form their own views.
“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.”
~ Albert Camus
I’ve been doing a lot of talking about freedom and my path to get there, but what does freedom actually mean?
According to the Oxford Dictionary definition freedom is:
1. The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants.
1.1 Absence of subjection to foreign domination or despotic government.
1.2 The power of self-determination attributed to the will; the quality of being independent of fate or necessity.
The list goes on, but these are the most relevant to my discussions on freedom.
For me all these definitions ring true.
Freedom, to me is escaping the 9-5 corporate world and having the ability to travel the world whenever I want and stay for as long as I want. I want to be able to travel without a plan, to go somewhere and not have to have everything booked because I can stay for as little or as long as I want depending on how much I like the place, and because I don’t have to worry about only having a few weeks leave to squeeze everything into.
To fully immerse myself in other cultures, to live like they do, to go off the beaten track and fully experience people and places. To have deep and meaningful experiences that help the soul, not just touch the surface.
Freedom is being care-free. Wind in your hair, sand at your feet, no make-up, endless days at the beach.
Living free from clutter. Not collecting things, having a few special possessions and not being defined by material objects. Living truly at peace with yourself and others. Helping others.
All of this is freedom to me.
To you, and to others, freedom would have very different meanings but whatever it means to anyone, doesn’t make them any more or less deserving of their freedom.
Everyone should feel entitled to access their freedom.
Everyone should feel powerful enough to escape whatever is burdening them and follow their dreams and passions.
Everyone should be able to live free and happy.
This is what I’m striving for. I want to free the world. I know it won’t happen overnight, but if enough people can start believing in themselves and pass this belief system on to others, the tribe of freedom seekers will be ever growing. We can escape corporate life. We must escape corporate life.
We WILL escape corporate life.
Who’s with me?
