Living In A Material World

November 1, 2015

How to deal with living in a material world.

I don’t know why, but today I couldn’t get these Madonna lyrics out of my mind. ‘Cos we are living in a material world and I am a material girl.’ And then it hit me, since starting this journey I’ve come to realise how materialistic I’ve previously been.

In the past, I’d open my cupboard (which is overflowing with clothing) yet I’d have nothing to wear.

If I’d posted a photo to Facebook in an outfit I couldn’t wear it in public again.

I was so focused on what other people thought of me that I would spend entire pay cheques on new clothing.

My spending wasn’t just limited to clothes – shoes, books, furniture, homewares etc. etc.

I wouldn’t think twice about whether I really needed these objects or not.

All that mattered was in that moment, I wanted it, and therefore I would have it.

I’d spend whole afternoons filling up shopping carts online. Scrolling through Instagram pages following new designers and adding links to my Pinterest boards.

The joys of living in a material world…

Now, I look around my room and sometimes feel claustrophobic from all the possessions I’ve collected over my years.

I look at these objects and realise how little value they add to my life. And how easy it is for me to discard and dispose of them once I no longer have use for them.

Then I think of the endless $$ I’ve spent on these items and wonder what for?

For a fleeting moment they brought me happiness, but was that really worth the credit card debt I ended up in? No.

I’ve recently paid down my debts. The feeling of relief that comes with that $0 balance is far better than the fleeting happiness any of those objects ever brought to me.

I now spend my $$ on collecting moments.

Meals with friends, music events, more holidays. But most importantly,  investing in my education! Guys you’re never too old to learn and grow. In fact as the world changes rapidly, this is the only way you can really hope to survive.

I used to have a serious case of FOMO (fear of missing out). I would commit to all these things I wasn’t even overly keen on but just had to go to in case I missed out on something good. Now I think twice about swiping my card.

I now only do things I want to do. Yes people may think I’m being antisocial, but at the end of the day if I’m happier for it, who cares.

My family members and true friends understand my end goal and they support me.

My boyfriend has a tattoo ‘memories over money’ – I didn’t get it at first but once he explained it to me it made so much sense.

And now, with the help of my new tribe, my motto is all about ‘collecting moments, not things’

We’re only young once, I’m going to embrace life and live it to the fullest.

When I’m travelling the world, I won’t be bringing all my objects with me, I’ll be collecting memories.

I look forward to meeting you soon.

Much Love
