One For The Bucket List – A Day Of Volunteering
Here’s to another cross off the bucket list – A Day of Volunteering (Number 63)
I’m really loving the feeling of crossing things off my bucket list and I know this is my year to make massive headway. Every time I cross something off, I feel a massive sense of achievement and today’s day of volunteering was extra rewarding.
Today I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to participate in a day of volunteering at a local charity, United Way.
They put on a monthly barbecue for local homeless and disadvantaged people and my team got to help with this today. We cooked, we cleaned, we served, and then we got to join them for the meal.
It was such a rewarding experience and something I wish I had taken part in sooner.
Seeing homeless people around our city always saddens me but I’ve never really known what I can do to help. Being involved in a day like today was a way we could take time out and give back to the community.
We get so caught up in our day to day lives, especially when it comes to work. We were all stressing about the emails that would mount up and the extra hours we’d have to put in to catch them up but once we got there we quickly forgot about that and were so happy to be there.
For one day, our phones and emails weren’t controlling us, we got to have true connections with different people and be part of something far better.
We learnt their stories and had a good laugh with some of them. What really struck me was the diversity of the people that came there, young, old, single, families, different nationalities, different levels of education, but all struggling to make ends meet.
Also, the level of gratitude they showed us.
It truly is amazing how such a simple act can make such a difference in a person’s day. We might not be able to change their lives, but for that few hours that we were in their presence, we made a big difference and the appreciation they showed us was so beautiful.
I want to be able to do things like this more often. Things that make me feel good. Things that give back to community. Things that help others feel good. I can’t wait to have the time and freedom to do more of what I love and help more people from everywhere in the world.
Today really put things into perspective for me. We never know what could be around the corner and this is exactly why I’m taking steps to build a better future for myself. To make the most of my life while I can and enjoy every moment the way I want.
If you’re ever presented with an opportunity to do something like this, I strongly encourage it, add it to your bucket list, it’s really one of the best things I’ve ever done and I can’t wait to be able to do something like this again.
