Tips for The Business of Blogging – How To Deal With Blogger’s Block and How to Blog Regularly
Today I want to discuss the business of BLOGGING; basically the foundation of a lot of online businesses.
A blog should be treated like the hub of your business, it’s pretty much your home on the web.
Within the system I’m using, we have eight core commitments we have to uphold, one of these is BLOGGING DAILY.
When you’re first starting out, the business of blogging can be pretty scary. I spent so much time making my blog look pretty because I had no clue what I was going to write about. The first few posts were easy, I spoke about what I’m doing, why I’m here, etc. But once I’d covered all that off I started to struggle for content.
Tip # 1: STOP PROCRASTINATING & WRITE!
There were lots of times when I thought my blog was going to be terrible and no-one was going to ever visit it so I shouldn’t even bother. I was confused about what to write about and scared no-one would like my posts. I’m also a bit of a perfectionist so I would spend hours editing little words and finding photos and trying to find memes etc. to make my posts look cool before I would actually hit the publish button.
The trick to blogging is just getting started. At first, don’t even worry about the content so much, you’re starting from scratch and don’t have a following so it doesn’t really matter what you write. Just let yourself get into the rhythm of writing, get a feel for your style and voice. Pick a theme/topic you love and write about that.
(e.g. if you’re a fashion student and want to build your fashion brand online talk about what you learn in school, your daily outfit inspiration etc. – yes there’s a lot of fashion blogs out there but your voice and style will be different – you can then promote your blog to fellow students in the field and you’ve found yourself your niche).

It seems like a lot, but there are people who build wildly successful online businesses entirely from their blog. Other social media sites may come and go but your blog is so powerful because it gives you longevity on the web.
Tip # 2: USE PROMPTS
If you’re really stuck for ideas you’ll find most blogging platforms provide daily prompts so when you’re starting out you can use these daily prompts. You can also use special tags they give you which will then get your post published on their daily post pages so other users can find your posts and you can build a following by interacting with those users.
As part of the system I use, we have access to a 21 day blogging challenge which guides you through different types of posts, topics to write about etc.
Some people say it takes 21 days to build new habits, hence the concept of the 21 day blogging challenge. If you can stick at it for 21 days (doesn’t sound like much at all right?) and see the benefits you get from doing this, then you can train your mind to continue doing it from that point on. Pretty cool.
Tip # 3: COLLABORATE
When you’re starting out, it’s good to join networks of people who are blogging about similar topics. I’m part of a range of groups on Facebook, from girl bloggers, to travel bloggers, to network marketing groups. Be interactive in these groups, not only can you learn from those that are further along in the game, you can also make some tight friendships, and join in on collaboration posts.
My favourite collaborations have been through a travel blogger group just for girls (Girl vs. Globe). I’ve collaborated on a number of posts and I always get full credit (if you are going to collaborate make sure your name & blog will be credited). This means you can leverage off bloggers who already have a name out there, you’re helping them because they need contributors for their posts to work, and they’re helping you with exposure. Generally these bloggers only want small extracts of what you write, and are more than happy for you to post your full post on your own blog, so when you’re stuck for ideas this can also come in really handy. Some of my favourite blog posts have been ones where I was inspired by a collaboration piece.
Tip # 4: GIVE VALUE
Once you’ve got in the habit of blogging daily you can start thinking more about the type of content you want to post. Think about what it is you actually want to achieve through your blog?
Essentially if you’re using your blog for business you want to get more traffic and drive more sales. Don’t make the mistake of becoming super salesy though. If you’re constantly talking about your product but not adding any value to make the reader want stick around, then you’re not going to succeed.
For example – the primary aim of my blog is to document my journey to freedom (and eventually become a full time travel blog), but I want to teach others how they can do the same. This is where the value comes in. In the beginning I mainly talk about my story and let people get to know me. As I progress and my journey unfolds I’m learning and developing.
As I learn and grow I can help others do the same by writing about what I’m learning.
This simple – learn, do, teach method – is super effective and will become the backbone of your successful blog. Basically, every single time you learn something valuable, write about it in a blog post and share with your audience so they can benefit from your findings.
For example – you may have had to read several articles on a topic before you really understood how to do something. Talk about that in your own blog and give tips on what you found to be the most effective method. People will appreciate you trying to save them time and will be more likely to visit your blog again, or maybe even subscribe to it.
Other value posts can be lists (top 10 ways to get traffic, 10 tips for packing lightly etc), how to posts (you could even do this in a video format if you find it easier), explaining or defining a concept, a story about something you’ve learnt.
How to Monetise Your Blog
- Advertising – there are plenty of ways to advertise these days, build an audience and sell ads via Google Adwords, text link ads, Facebook, Instagram, banner ads etc. **some of these things do take lots of skills and you could waste a lot of money so be sure you know what you’re doing and invest in the correct training before you try it for yourself.**
- Become a promoter – try out restaurants, hotels, bars, adventure activities, etc. and blog about them. The company you blog about will usually have a much larger network they will then share your post with and eventually your name will get around and your following will grow. As your name gets out there more start up companies will want you to blog about them and will give you lots of freebies to get recognition on your blog.
- Sell a product on the back end. Your product could be anything – an e-book, physical product, live event, affiliate products etc.
- Build an audience and sell your blog. This will take time as you need to have a large, highly engaged audience, making the site a valuable asset for someone else who wants to purchase it and maintain it. And once you sell it that’s it, there’s no more to be made.
Personally, I’ve opted for number 3.
Unless you have a blog with loads of traffic, you won’t get rich with advertising.
People won’t trust you to promote their stuff until you have built a name for yourself so that one’s a bit of a catch 22. Unless you’re really persuasive, and lots of people have done this successfully.
As for me, I blog to bring traffic to my site and use my blog as a way of directing traffic to my affiliate offers. This is how I get paid. You don’t need a large blog following to do this and it allows you to monetise your blog for a lifetime because you can always change and add new products to your back end.
Focus on building your audience and producing QUALITY content and the opportunities to make money will come.
Food For Thought
I was watching some of our new training videos yesterday and our founder used a great analogy. Your blog is like an island, at first it’s unknown territory and not many people visit it. You need to build it up into a place people want to visit (by getting lots of content on there) and once it’s ready you need to build roads and transport so people can actually get there (direct traffic to your blog through your social media networks – Facebook, google ads, instagram etc.) Eventually your island will become so popular people won’t be able to stop talking about it (sharing your posts) and by word of mouth more and more people will visit it.
And that my friends is the business of blogging, and how a successful blog is born.

Your blog won’t become incredible overnight. But keep working on it daily and your blog could be the next big thing.
